大阪新町 木原席智惠菊
Chiegiku of Kiharaseki, Shinmachi
About this photo
The photo album Kyoto Osaka Imayo Bijin Fuzoku (Beauties of Today in Kyoto and Osaka), published in 1903 (Meiji 36) by the photographer Ogawa Kazumasa, contains portraits of women of Kyoto and Osaka. In this one, she stands in a soft-looking kimono with an unobtrusive pattern. In front of her chest she holds something long and thin in both hands, which could be a closed fan. The name under the photo reads "Osaka Shinmachi, Kiharaseki Chiegiku."
Shinmachi is linked with Sunaba, a long-established soba (buckwheat noodle) shop. The name is said to come from sunaba (sand yard), one of the places where materials were stored when Osaka Castle was built. A 1798 (Kansei 10) guide map of Shinmachi lists the names Izumiya and Tsunokuniya as famous noodle shops. Izumiya's shopfront is pictured in a book published in 1730 (Kyoho 15), so it was open by that time at the latest.
A stone monument marking Sunaba's birthplace still stands in Shinmachi Minami Park, Shinmachi 2-chome, Nishi Ward, Osaka City.
