日光東照廟唐門

Karamon Gate, Nikko

Nikko, Tochigi · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

In the grounds of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a sharply curving roof juts out at a slant, with what look like pillars and carvings packed tightly beneath it.

About this photo

At the roof's left end is something like a curled ornament. Midway down on the right, a second roof with a lattice pattern overlaps it, and below that, a band that could be a wall or stonework runs across.

Toshogu's Karamon Gate stands in front of the worship hall. The whole gate is coated in gofun, a white pigment, and covered in intricate carvings.

The ground in front is covered edge to edge with small stones. They come out so clearly you can pick out each one.
