日光中禪寺湖

Lake Chuzenji, Nikko

Nikko, Tochigi · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

A mountainside drops steeply from the upper right, and from its foot, a low shore pushes out like a cape into Lake Chuzenji at Nikko.

About this photo

The low shore is lined with a fine, bumpy edge that might be trees or rows of houses. Off to the left in the distance, the outline of a mountain shows faintly, and on the dark water in front float a few small black shapes.

Lake Chuzenji was formed when an eruption of Mount Nantai held back its waters. About 20,000 years ago, lava that poured out is believed to have blocked a valley.
