東京堀切菖蒲園
Iris Garden at Horikiri
White flowers are dotted across the whole foreground. It is an iris garden at Horikiri in Meiji-era Tokyo, with a low building under a large roof in the back.
About this photo
On the left, halfway up, sits a low building with a large roof. Pines and other trees continue behind it and off to the right, and at the upper right edge a single tall tree reaches into the sky. Roughly the near half of the picture is packed with clumps of iris in white bloom.
Iris gardens at Horikiri began in the late Edo period, around the years 1801 to 1804. The first one was opened by Kodaka Izaemon, and it later came to be known as Kodaka-en.
