Kameido Tenjin Shrine

Kameido, Tokyo · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

Behind the hanging branches, the half-circle arch of a drum bridge stands out sharply. These are the grounds of Kameido's Tenjin shrine, a famous spot for wisteria.

About this photo

Leaves and branches hang down from the top edge, covering the picture. Below them, in the middle, a bridge rises in a high half-circle arch lined with railing posts. On the left stands one tall trunk, and on the right a tree that looks like a pine. In front of the bridge, a low frame of posts and rails runs across the picture, and a white streak of light is reflected on the water at the very bottom.

The main buildings of Kameido Tenjin Shrine were modeled on Dazaifu Tenmangu in Kyushu. The shrine has been known for its wisteria since the Edo period, and the flowers appear in ukiyo-e prints as well. A drum bridge still stands in the grounds today. The English title under the photo reads "WISTARIA BLOSSOM AT KAMEIDO."
