横濱港

Yokohama Harbor

Yokohama, Kanagawa · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

Seen from high above, Yokohama's tiled roofs crowd together all the way to the horizon, under a bright white sky.

About this photo

Close by, the roofs are black. Farther off they fade to a pale gray, and near the horizon they blur into a fine grain. Along the flat horizon, a few thin vertical lines stick up into the sky. Among the black roofs, two white-walled buildings with rows of windows stand out brightly.

The port of Yokohama opened in 1859, and an east wharf and a west wharf were built at that time. Osanbashi Pier, today the oldest pier in the port, was built between 1889 and 1896.
