紀伊高野山金堂

Kondo (Main Hall), Koyasan

Koyasan, Wakayama · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

A large triangular gable faces us from the upper roof of this hall, which burned down in 1926.

About this photo

A large hall fills the picture from the left to the center. Its roof comes in two tiers, the lower one jutting forward as deep eaves, and just beneath it, three long white shapes stand in a row with gaps between them. A wide stretch of open ground lies in front of the hall, and on the right are trees and several low-roofed buildings.

The Kondo is the main hall for all of Koyasan, and tradition says it was built in 819 by Kobo Daishi Kukai. The photo shows the Kondo as it stood before the fire of 1926.
