Wakanoura
Tree branches reach far out over the water from a dark cliff, and beyond them, bright white water stretches all the way to a low, distant shore.
About this photo
A rocky cliff thick with trees takes up the right half of the picture. On the left, the water shows up almost white, and beyond it a low shore stretches across in a thin line. Along the water's edge at the foot of the cliff runs a series of step-like lines.
Wakanoura is a scenic spot in Wakayama City, now designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty. In 724, Yamabe no Akahito, traveling in the retinue of Emperor Shomu, wrote a poem about the tide coming in and going out in this bay. The poem was later mentioned in the kana preface of the Kokin Wakashu, and Wakanoura came to be known as a sacred place of waka poetry.
