江戸風俗十二ケ月之内 八月 月見之宴(中の1枚)

Eighth Month: Moon-Viewing Party, from Twelve Months of Edo Customs (Center Panel)

Tokyo · 1889 (Meiji era)

A yellow full moon, crossed by cloud, in a gray night sky. In the room, beside a paper lamp and red flowers, a woman faces something like a long koto.

About this print

In front of it, a woman in a red kimono bends forward, and behind her sits a woman in gray. Outside the room lies the night landscape, its pine trees and distant waterside sunk in gray. From the eaves, a hexagonal hanging lamp trails red tassels, and below it, far off, a small figure in a purple kimono stands alone.

Of the three sheets set side by side to show a single party, this center one is the only one with the moon in it. The night of the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month is called jugoya, the night of the mid-autumn full moon.
