江戸風俗十二ケ月之内 八月 月見之宴(左の1枚)

Eighth Month: Moon-Viewing Party, from Twelve Months of Edo Customs (Left Panel)

Tokyo · 1889 (Meiji era)

Beside a woman seated with one hand raised to her face, another stands holding a branch of red leaves or flowers. Their kimono are pale pink and blue, and behind them spreads a gray night landscape.

About this print

Beyond the open shoji, low hills and pine trees dissolve into the gray of night. In the room are two women. Large red flowers are scattered across the hem of the standing woman's kimono. A round hanging lamp trails red and purple tassels.

This is the left-hand sheet of the three. The center sheet, too, has a hanging lamp with red tassels under its eaves. At moon viewing, it is the custom to offer dumplings (dango) to the moon, not only on the night of the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month but also on jusanya, the thirteenth night of the ninth month.
