江戸風俗十二ケ月之内 八月 月見之宴(右の1枚)

Eighth Month: Moon-Viewing Party, from Twelve Months of Edo Customs (Right Panel)

Tokyo · 1889 (Meiji era)

At the back of the room, the shoji screens glow yellow. On this right-hand sheet of a three-sheet moon-viewing party, three women in kimono have gathered.

About this print

One wears red florals, one red, one green. The women in red and green sit below the one in florals, so the reds seem to pile up one over another. To the right of the yellow shoji, something like a folding screen or sliding door painted with a landscape comes into view.

The print series Twelve Months of Edo Customs shows the customs of Edo month by month, from the first month to the twelfth, in fine detail. The Edo-Tokyo Museum's sheets for the seventh, tenth and eleventh months are all three-sheet sets, too. This eighth month also becomes one picture when its three sheets are placed side by side, with this room at the right end. The title cartouche sits above the lamp at the upper right.
