江戸風俗十二ケ月之内 六月 山王祭(右の1枚)
Sixth Month: Sanno Festival, from Twelve Months of Edo Customs (Right Panel)
People in blue, red and purple kimono are lined up beneath a large white roof. The Sanno Festival named in the title was one of the "Tenka Matsuri," festivals that the shogun watched in the Edo period.
About this print
This is the right-hand panel of three that, laid side by side, form a single picture. At this panel's left edge, a wall with a black-and-white diamond pattern continues straight onto the right edge of the center panel.
The Sanno Festival is the festival of Hie Shrine. In the Edo period, its procession, centered on festival floats (dashi), entered Edo Castle. Starting with Iemitsu, the third shogun, successive shoguns watched it.
