相州江の島西浦
Nishiura (West Shore) of Enoshima, Sagami Province
A tree-covered slope narrows like a cape as it runs into the water, and below it, a rocky shore of whitish stone spreads out in tiers.
About this photo
A dark, tree-covered slope runs gently downward and narrows at its tip like a cape before entering the water. Below the slope spreads a shore of flat rocks, whitish layers stacked one behind another in tiers. Beyond lie bright water and a hazy sky, the line between them softly melting away.
Enoshima, in the title, is an island in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture. In the Edo period, devotion to the Enoshima Benzaiten drew crowds of pilgrims to the island. With the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji era, the site gave up its Buddhist forms and became Enoshima Shrine.
