相摸鎌倉大佛

Great Buddha of Kamakura

Kamakura, Kanagawa · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

Framed by dark trees, the Great Buddha of Kamakura sits against a bright sky, with no roof overhead.

About this photo

Set between the bright sky and the dark trees, only the statue shows up gray. The line of its round head, sloping gently down to the shoulders, remains distinct against everything around it.

The Great Buddha of Kamakura is the principal image of Kotokuin Temple, a seated bronze figure of Amida Buddha. Work on it is said to have begun around 1252, and today it is a National Treasure. It first sat inside a Great Buddha Hall, but typhoons and a great tsunami brought the hall down, and by the end of the Muromachi period the statue had become what it is today, the "roza no Daibutsu," a Great Buddha sitting out in the open. That is also why the statue in the photo has the sky behind it.
