田子の浦富士

Mount Fuji from Tagonoura

Tagonoura, Shizuoka · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

The view from Tagonoura. Beyond a boat under tall sails, off to the left, the faint shape of a mountain spreads its broad base.

About this photo

Several pale, upright sails stand in a row. In the foreground on the left, a thin line like a mast rises, and at the far right a tree with spreading branches stands black against the sky.

Tagonoura is known for a poem by Yamabe no Akahito in the Man'yoshu poetry anthology. It describes looking up at Mount Fuji after passing through Tagonoura: "Coming out by way of Tagonoura, I look, and the high peak of Fuji is pure white with fallen snow."

Right below the sails, the boat's reflection drops straight down into the water.
