箱根蘆の湖

Lake Ashi, Hakone

Hakone, Kanagawa · Before 1898 (Meiji era)

Dark trees close in from both sides, and through the gap between them the bright water of Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) appears as an inverted triangle. Across the water rises a tree-covered mountainside.

About this photo

Lake Ashi was formed when a slope of Mount Kamiyama in Hakone collapsed in a massive landslide, and the debris dammed what was then the course of the Hayakawa River.

In the Edo period, the Hakone Checkpoint (sekisho) was set up on the lake's shore, and the post town of Hakone was established next to it. The checkpoint was run by the Odawara Domain. A lookout post (tomi bansho) was also set up to watch for anyone trying to get around the checkpoint by crossing the lake.
